Cordyceps: Benefits for Men and Women, Dosage, Side Effects and How to Choose

by themycotech 31 Oct 2026

Quick answer: Cordyceps is a functional mushroom traditionally used in Tibetan, Chinese and Himalayan medicine (where the wild form is called keeda jadi or yarsagumba) to fight tiredness and support stamina. Today most supplements use cultivated Cordyceps militaris or fermented Cs-4. Small human studies suggest modest benefits for exercise capacity and energy; it is generally well tolerated at 1–3 g a day.

What is cordyceps?

Cordyceps is a group of fungi. The famous wild species, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, grows at high altitude in the Himalayas, including Uttarakhand, Nepal and Tibet, and is so rare that it sells for very high prices. Because wild harvesting is limited and unsustainable, supplements today use cultivated Cordyceps militaris, which naturally contains more cordycepin, or Cs-4, a strain grown by fermentation.

Consistency Standardised batches Varies; risk of adulteration
Used in most supplements? Yes Rarely (mostly Cs-4 instead)

Cordyceps benefits

1. Energy and stamina

Cordyceps is best known for fighting tiredness. It is thought to support how cells produce energy (ATP) and how the body uses oxygen during exercise.

2. Exercise performance

In a 12-week study of healthy older adults, 1 g a day of Cs-4 modestly improved exercise capacity (Chen et al., 2010). Another study found that a Cordyceps militaris blend improved tolerance to high-intensity exercise after 3 weeks (Hirsch et al., 2017). Results in trained athletes are mixed: one study in cyclists found no improvement (Parcell et al., 2004). Cordyceps seems most helpful for everyday stamina rather than elite performance.

3. Immune support

Like other functional mushrooms, cordyceps contains polysaccharides that interact with the immune system. Most of this research is in the lab or in animals.

4. Healthy ageing and antioxidant support

Cordyceps compounds show antioxidant activity in lab research, which is one reason it appears in skin and vitality formulas.

Cordyceps benefits for men

Traditionally, cordyceps has been used to support male vitality, stamina and energy. Human research on cordyceps alone for testosterone or libido is limited, which is why vitality formulas usually combine it with herbs that have more evidence, such as ashwagandha, shilajit and tribulus.

Cordyceps benefits for women

For women, cordyceps is mainly used for everyday energy, exercise recovery and as an antioxidant in skin-support formulas. The same cautions apply: avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Cordyceps vs shilajit

Cordyceps Shilajit
What it is A functional mushroom A mineral-rich resin from Himalayan rocks
Key compounds Cordycepin, adenosine, polysaccharides Fulvic acid, trace minerals
Traditional use Stamina, breathing, vitality Strength, energy, Rasayana (rejuvenation) in Ayurveda
Best for Oxygen use and endurance Cellular energy and mineral support

The two work in different ways, which is why they are often taken together, as in Level Up Energy. For the full comparison, read Cordyceps vs shilajit: which is better for you?

Cordyceps dosage

  • In studies: about 1–3 g a day of cordyceps on its own.
  • In combination formulas: smaller amounts of cordyceps are combined with other ingredients that support the same goal. Follow the dose on the label.
  • When: in the morning or before exercise, with food. Some people find it too energising late in the evening.
  • How long: take it daily for at least 4–8 weeks before judging the results.

Side effects and who should be careful

  • Usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, dry mouth or nausea are occasionally reported.
  • Cordyceps may affect blood clotting and blood sugar. Talk to your doctor if you take blood thinners or diabetes medicines, or have surgery planned.
  • Avoid it with autoimmune conditions or immune-suppressing medicines unless your doctor approves.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Buy from a licensed brand. Wild cordyceps is often faked or adulterated.

How to choose a cordyceps supplement

  • The species is named (Cordyceps militaris or Cs-4), not just "cordyceps".
  • The dose per capsule is printed; avoid "proprietary blends" that hide amounts.
  • It is FSSAI licensed and lab tested.
  • Extract rather than raw powder, for a consistent amount of active compounds.

Cordyceps in themycotech formulas

Level Up Energy combines cordyceps with shilajit, ashwagandha and tribulus for stamina and strength. Glow 360 uses cordyceps with hyaluronic acid, amla and biotin for skin and hair. Every dose is listed on the product pages.
